CCDET 2024 Course Offerings

CCDET I: Clean Truck Check

Background: As of January 1 of 2023, CARB’s Heavy Duty Inspection and Maintenance Regulation (Renamed “Clean Truck Check”) took effect. All testers who perform emissions testing pursuant to the new regulation must pass CARB’s online Clean Truck Check (HD I/M) course and test, available for free on the CARB website.

Many people prefer live classroom instruction; so CCDET will offer a new version of CCDET I that covers the same material as the free online CARB course. The new CCDET offering, called CCDET I: Clean Truck Check, offers live classroom instruction and has the added benefit of including hands-on instruction in operating both OBD devices and smoke meters, which are not offered in the free CARB online course. Because CCDET courses use live instructors and include hands-on labs, there is a registration fee, so CCDET I: Clean Truck Check is NOT FREE.

Upon completion of our course, participants will still logon to CARB’s website to take the CARB online certification test and receive their Clean Truck Check tester number directly from CARB once they pass the test.

CCDET II: D.E.A.M

The CCDET II course has been discontinued.

CCDET III: Smoke Testing Cargo Handling Equipment

CCDET III will be available in 2024, but it will be on a reduced schedule. The course will be offered approximately once per quarter as demand dictates. It will also likely be included in a combination class where participants recieve multiple CCDET certifications in one day.

CCDET IV: Commercial Harbor Craft

This course was created pursuant to CARB 2023 Amended CHC Regulation Order, California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 93118.5. It provides information on Smoke Testing Commercial Harbor Craft.

CCDET I: Clean Truck Check & Hands-on OBD & SAE J1667 Smoke Testing (On-road Vehicles)

The old CCDET I: HDVIP / PSIP & SAE J1667 Smoke Testing has been discontinued and replaced by CCDET I: Clean Truck Check

You need CCDET I if you perform:

OBD Testing or SAE J1667 Snap Acceleration Testing and would like hands-on in-person instruction.

This 6-hour course covers the requirements of the California Air Resources Board’s Clean Truck Check regulation, formerly known as Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M). CARB’s Clean Truck Check curriculum and certification exam are available for free online.

This CCDET I: Clean Truck Check course was developed for those who prefer in-person instruction and who would like hands-on instruction in performing the SAE J1667 Snap Acceleration Smoke Test and Onboard Diagnostic Testing. The CCDET I version of Clean Truck check is not free. This in-person class costs $175 and is administered by the California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET), not directly by CARB.

It is important to note that CARB remains the only credentialing entity for Clean Truck Check. Participants who complete this CCDET I course must still take and pass CARB’s online exam to become Credentialed Testers under the regulation.

CCDET III: Smoke-testing Cargo Handling Equipment

You need CCDET III if you perform:

Periodic smoke inspections on Cargo Handling Equipment at ports or intermodal rail yards

This 4-hour course covers implementing opacity testing for Cargo Handling Equipment (CHE). It includes smoke test regulations, requirements, and standards as they apply to CHE, SAE J1667 Snap-Acceleration Test procedures with specific variations for CHE. The course includes both classroom and hands-on components.

CCDET IV: Smoke Testing Commercial Harbor Craft

You need CCDET IV if you perform:

Periodic smoke inspections on Commercial Harbor Craft operated in regulated California waters

This one-day course covers implementing Periodic Smoke Inspection for Commercial Harbor Craft (CHC). It includes the environmental and health impacts of particulate matter, smoke test regulations, requirements, and standards as they apply to CHC, SAE J1667 Snap-Acceleration Test procedures with specific variations for CHC, Opacity Test fail procedures, and an overview of using Method 9 to assess smoke opacity from stationary sources. The course includes both classroom and hands-on components.

This course was created pursuant to the amended CHC Regulation Order California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 93118.5, that became effective on December 30, 2022.

You need this course if:

You want to be certified in both on-road vehicles & Cargo Handling Equipment
You'd like to pay a discounted rate of $250 ($50 savings: CCDET I $175 + CCDET III $125 = $300)

Some CCET Colleges offer the CCDET I & III courses on the same day. Participants pay a discounted price over the individual pricing, and will be able to test and receive certification for smoke-testing both on-road vehicles and cargo handling equipment. This is ideal for smoke-testers for-hire who might be called upon to work on a variety of equipment for clients.

The class includes hands-on instruction in performing the SAE J1667 Snap Acceleration Smoke Test Procedure and instruction on the applicable on-road vehicle and cargo handing equipment regulations.
